Find out about the Latest News and Updates for Lonsdale Street
Presently, Lonsdale Street creates a barrier to easy and safe access between the two halves of the city centre. It lacks the pedestrian friendly environment and vibrancy that might be expected in the retail and business heart of a city.
The Drum Theatre provides a glimpse of the potential of Lonsdale Street as a gateway to central Dandenong and a destination for visitors to the city. Lonsdale Street will become an attractive green boulevard as well as a retail, commercial, services and residential destination for locals and Melbourne's south east population.
The completed Lonsdale Street will feature:
- Slow moving traffic for safety and easy crossing
- Easily accessible public transport
- Wider footpaths and a more pleasant street environment to attract kerbside activity
- Priority for pedestrians and cyclists to promote circulation by foot and bicycle
- Extended pedestrian crossing times to reduce waiting
- More trees creating a boulevard character and shade (whilst maintaining road safety standards)
- Improved lighting for safety and to encourage activity on footpaths
- Attractive shopping strip to encourage a broader retail mix
Lonsdale Street works have commenced. The project partners are working with businesses and VicRoads to minimise disruption and ensure public safety by programming works in stages and keeping relevant parties informed.
