VicUrban has returned a further 16 car parking bays to the western side of Lonsdale Street, between Walker and Scott Streets. A total of 37 car parking bays are now available in this section.
This follows the May return of the first car parking bays and the recent planting of 27 Pin Oak trees.
The western length of Lonsdale Street's service lane, between Scott and Walker streets, is now open to vehicles and the wider pedestrian footpath is in place.
This first upgraded section of Lonsdale Street also showcases significantly improved lighting that will be replicated along the Street's length.
High efficiency Cosmopolis Lamps light the carriageways, service lanes and footpaths. When completed the transformed Lonsdale Street will feature approximately 260 carriageway, service lane and footpath lights, compared to approximately 60 before the upgrade commenced.
VicUrban's Development Director, Michael King, said solid progress was being made in the transformation of Lonsdale Street.
“In recent times VicUrban has opened a significantly wider footpath, returned 37 car spaces, opened the pedestrian crossing at Scott Street and commenced planting 265 Pin Oak trees,” Mr King said.
“The new lighting will make Lonsdale Street a much more inviting area in the evening. I think people will be surprised at just how much light there will be on the footpaths and over the service lanes,” he said.
VicUrban anticipates returning the first car parks to the eastern side of Lonsdale Street, between Clow and Walker streets, in approximately eight weeks.
The majority of Lonsdale Street works will be completed prior to the 2010 Christmas period. This will include the completion of road, service lane, footpath and planting works on both sides of the Street, from Clow to Walker streets. A large majority of works on the eastern side, between Walker and Foster streets will also be completed prior to Christmas.
The western side of Lonsdale Street, between Walker and Foster Streets, will be completed in early 2011.
“Through completing a small section of the works in 2011 we will assist traders and shoppers by instating most of Lonsdale Street's car parking and minimising construction activity during the busy Christmas period,” Mr King said.
