Twenty car parks returning as new Lonsdale Street takes shape

Thursday, 27 May 2010

VicUrban will next week return vehicular access and 20 car parks to the first upgraded section of Dandenong's Lonsdale Street.

The first upgraded section of the iconic Revitalising Central Dandenong project is approximately 100 metres in length and located on the Street's western side, between Walker and Scott streets. It showcases many of the features that will be visible along the majority of Lonsdale Street by late 2010.

The section will include:

  • 20 car parks in a newly paved service lane
  • A granite paved and wider footpath
  • New attractive street lighting
  • Bicycle stands
  • In the coming weeks, new Pin Oak trees will be planted.

VicUrban's Development Director, Michael King, was joined by City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti and Member for Dandenong John Pandazopoulos to inspect the upgraded section of service lane.

“This section gives us all a glimpse of what the completed street will look like. In recent days our team has received a number of compliments, particularly in relation to people enjoying the wider and smoother footpath,” Mr King said.

“While there will continue to be some temporary inconvenience during the ongoing works, this upgraded section demonstrates how nice a place the completed Lonsdale Street will be for shoppers and visitors,” he said.

Member for Dandenong, John Pandazopoulos MP, said the revitalisation of Dandenong was taking shape.

“The State Government, VicUrban, Council and the community are working hand in hand to create a new central Dandenong that benefits the entire south east region,” Mr Pandazopoulos said.

“The transformation that is now occurring in Lonsdale Street was overwhelmingly supported by community members who provided input during development of the Revitalising Central Dandenong Urban Master Plan,” he said.

City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti welcomed the progress along Lonsdale Street.

“This small upgraded section is a big improvement on what was previously here. It's exciting to think about how the completed Street will create a welcoming atmosphere in the centre of town,” Cr Memeti said.

VicUrban anticipates returning vehicular access to the remaining section of service lane between Walker and Scott streets in approximately six weeks (subject to weather).

VicUrban will shortly commence temporary service lane closures on the Street's eastern side; between Clow and Walker streets. These temporary closures will enable VicUrban to replicate the paving, lighting, footpath, car parking, bicycle, and tree improvements that are now on display.
