Residents in Greater Dandenong have been asked to name the new George Street Bridge.

Launching the George Street Bridge naming competition in Dandenong, Member for Dandenong John Pandazopoulos and City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti encouraged locals to get behind the challenge.

The new bridge – being delivered by VicRoads – is an important feature of the Victorian Government's $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative being delivered by Vicurban, in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong.

Mr Pandazopoulos said the competition would enable locals to name their city’s latest landmark.

“The new bridge will become a local landmark for locals and visitors to central Dandenong and a focal point in the city’s transformation,” Mr Pandazopoulos said.

“It’s fitting that we ask those who will drive, cycle or walk across the bridge to suggest a name that evokes pride in our city.”

Cr Memeti said people should embrace this opportunity to be part of local history. He said the project team was looking for a name that promotes local identity, reflects the site’s history and/or looks towards the city’s future.

“The George St Bridge, when complete, will be the new gateway into central Dandenong, improving accessibility for people living, working and shopping in our city,” Cr Memeti said.

“The new bridge will not only feature artwork reflective of Dandenong’s market history, but it is hoped its name will also be reflective of the thoughts and feelings of the residents who live here.

“I would encourage all residents to have their say in the naming of this significant piece of infrastructure,” he said.

The winning name will be determined by the City of Greater Dandenong based on a recommendation from project staff. This process will be overseen by the Office of Geographic Names Victoria.

Entrants have until June 18, 2010 to submit a name.
