Major works commence to align Dandenong's George and Walker Streets

Thursday, 8 April 2010

VicUrban will this week commence major works to align George and Walker Streets and provide a better connection between the George Street Bridge and central Dandenong.

When completed in approximately six-months, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles utilising the George Street Bridge will be able to travel directly from Cheltenham Road into the centre of Dandenong.

The first stage of works is occurring on the eastern side of the under construction George Street Bridge. It involves realigning George Street to link up with the intersection of Walker and Robinson Streets. There will also be some works along the southern section of Cadle Street.

Work will also commence along Walker Street in late April / early May - between Robinson and Thomas streets - to deliver; granite footpaths, a new dedicated bike path, signalised intersections, priority bus lanes and approximately 55 new trees.

Daytime pedestrian and vehicle access will be maintained during these works. Any disruption to existing parking bays within the vicinity of Walker Street, along Robinson, Mason and Thomas Streets will be minimised.

The installation of traffic lights at the Walker Street intersections of Thomas and Mason Streets will require some night works and potential night-time road closures and diversions.

VicUrban's Development Director, Michael King, said the works represented another key milestone for the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.

“The alignment of George Street and Walker Streets, combined with the new Bridge, will create an attractive and accessible western entrance to Dandenong,” Mr King said.

“By making it easier for pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and cars to move around, while also installing attractive street features, we will activate a part of town that is currently underutilised.”

“Walker Street will also be home to one frontage of the under-construction Government Services Building. A new major building and a better functioning road network will create a spine of activity that encourages more businesses and residents to come to Dandenong,” Mr King said.

VicUrban's Trader Engagement Manager is continuing to liaise with Walker Street businesses to keep them informed of work schedules. The construction schedule is planned to provide pedestrian access to places of business during normal business hours.

Regular construction updates will be available at www.revitalisingcentraldandenong.com.
