VicUrban has announced that preliminary works are progressing to prepare for the future upgrade of George Street and part of Walker Street as part of the $290 Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.
In the coming weeks, a six-month work program will commence to align George Street with Walker Street and provide a better connection between the George Street Bridge and central Dandenong.
On completion, these works will see George Street aligned with Walker Street, so that cars utilising the George Street Bridge can travel directly from Cheltenham Road into the centre of Dandenong without making any sharp turns.
The upgraded stretch of road will commence at the eastern side of the George Street Bridge, take in the newly aligned George Street, and also incorporate the section of Walker Street between Robinson and Thomas Streets.
The upgraded road will feature a dedicated bicycle path, priority bus lanes and quality pedestrian facilities including upgraded pathways and traffic lights at the intersections where Walker Street intersects with Cadle, Mason and Thomas Streets. The upgrade will make it easier for cyclists, pedestrians, buses and vehicles to travel from the west into central Dandenong.
VicUrban's Revitalising Central Dandenong Development Director, Michael King, said VicUrban will advise of a start date for the road works in the coming weeks.
“Building on the transformation of Lonsdale Street, these works will create a new western entry into Dandenong, providing a welcoming environment where more people come to live, work, learn and visit.”
“These works signal the continuation of on-the-ground improvements under the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative and will help deliver more people into the heart of Dandenong.”
In preparation for the upcoming road works, recent preliminary works have involved the removal of 19 trees on Walker Street; between Thomas and Robinson Streets. These removed trees will eventually be replaced by 55 Acer x Freemanii (Jeffersred Autumn Blaze) trees, between the George Street Bridge and Lonsdale Street. These trees will add greenery and atmosphere to the western spine of central Dandenong, and will utilise advanced water sensitive urban design techniques to capture rainwater for irrigation.
Regular updates will be available at www.revitalsingcentraldandenong.com and anybody with questions about the works can contact the Revitalising Central Dandenong One Stop Shop on 03 8317 3566.
